2000The Millennium Dome |
Epic Fail. The Millennium Dome, the project that was Tony Blair’s mark for the new Millennium, opened with chaos as visitors has to queue for ages just to get inside the building which was soon to fail completely, and not because of the Millennium Bug. Luckily, it is now one of the best places to be for watching live stage shows under its new name, the O2 Arena. |
2001The Quiet Landslide |
The date was the 7 June 2001 and Tony Blair won his second landslide victory in a general election dubbed ‘the quiet landslide’ with a majority of 167 but with only 59% of the electorate voting, the lowest general election turnout since 1918. Was this because people knew Tony would win and were quite content, or was it ever more proof of disengagement from formal politics in Britain? |
| 9/11 | The political landscape of the world changes after suicide bombers fly planes into the World Trade Centre. Although some conspiracy theorists argue that it wasn’t foreign terrorists, this event that killed more than 2900 people had a massive impact of Western foreign policy and national politics alike. |
2003Iraq |
After intelligence was received arguing that Saddam Hussain could deploy and launch WMDs within 45 minutes, the US, UK and to a lesser extent Australia, Denmark, Poland and Spain, declared war and invaded Iraq. What started as a invasion of national defence has turned into a disaster, the implications of which will effect Western politics for some time to come. The Inquiry into this war continues… |
2005May: Post-Iraq election |
After a decline in popularity due to the invasion of Iraq, Tony Blair won a third consecutive general election but with a depleted majority of 66. |
2007Granita Pact honoured |
After a very interesting but unknown meeting between Gordon Brown and Tony Blair in 1994, it is alleged that the two political heavyweights came to a deal that Blair would lead the country to get Labour back into power but would give way after two terms so Brown could be crowned leader and PM. In the summer of 2007 Tony Blair made good on the deal and stepped aside to allow Gordon Brown’s coronation. |
The run on Northern Rock |
On the 14th September 2007, Northern Rock begged the Bank of England to save its skin as it was on the edge of bankruptcy |
2009Unemployment meets record highs |
With the unemployment level around 2.5 million, the recession caused by an irresponsible banking system (note system, not just bankers) has left many families feeling the cold this winter of ’09. |
| MPs and Duck houses | Well… I mean, well… what can one say. British MPs have been claiming for this and that, from moats to duck houses but we all must understand, ‘it was within the letter and spirit of the rules’… patronising b******s. While British people are doing their best to get through the recession, MPs might have finally realised that it’s their wages, not ours, that’s for buying things they want. |
2010Election looms |
Could this be a 1974 election all over again? I don’t really know what to hope for… |
I like how Gorden looks like he is down the pub with some mates saying “Wanker”!
