HUBA show off their moves at Freshers' 09
Last week saw the University of Huddersfield Students’ Union (UHSU) Freshers’ Fayre, the main event that introduces Huddersfield’s latest naive young’uns to the big wide world of university life.
Taking place in the huge white marquee outside the Students’ Union Building, members of student societies and local businesses alike descended upon the campus, filling up the impressive white structures, as well as much of the space around them.
All of the Union’s societies were on full show, wooing new students into becoming the latest member of their small group of like-minded individuals.
Football, Rugby and the Huddersfield Hawks were there, as well as a few niche societies, such as the Medieval Re-enactment Society and the Caving club.
Despite being stuck in the big white tent all day, everyone seemed in good spirits- students trying to drag fresh faces into their society managed to stay cheerful and friendly all day- and let me tell you, that’s no easy task.
Thanks must be given to Dominoes and Subway for giving out free samples to students all day long. While they had to have made losses, they kept people happy and full all day- Subway even talked a couple of poor souls into walking around dressed as an olive and a jalapeño pepper, I salute these men.

Some queued for over two hours just to get into the Freshers' marquee
Walking around the fayre, we were spoilt for choice. Camel Club and Warehouse were two tables I saw drawing a crowd, as well as the three lovely ladies who braved the cold and wore their bikinis in aid of HUBA (Huddersfield University Boarding Association) society.
Even the Freshers’ themselves were all happy and eager despite a hard week’s partying, and application lists seemed to fill up in no time. The Union’s newest addition, RadioHudd student radio station had more interest than anyone could have hoped possible.
It would be hard to call the fayre anything but a rousing success. Students were waiting in queues of lengths not seen since Michael Jackson’s last UK tour. Despite waiting to get in for over two hours in some cases, freshers were all too happy to speak to me about their first week in Huddersfield, and be cheery about it, in spite of a half day wait.
With the fayre literally bursting at the seems all day and happy students walking the grounds, Thursday was a fine day to be at the University of Huddersfield- let’s see for how long it takes for the happy first years to become stressed, overworked first years.
Welcome to the mad house kids.

the HUBA girls definitely made the day much more bearable… well that and i got to use the megaphone.
At least you didn’t catch anything from the Freshers…
